I make handcrafted jewellery and put a lot of time and care into each piece. My jewellery is crafted to last and be enjoyed for a long time. Here are some tips on taking care of your pieces.I find many metals like sterling silver, copper, and brass will gradually tarnish, changing colour and darkening over time due to oxidization, which is being exposed to the air. So I always suggest when you are not wearing your jewellery you seal your pieces up in small ziplock bags, which I provide when you purchase an item.
Also, when storing jewellery be careful not to mix pieces, even if they are of the same metal. Metals will react to one another and speed up the tarnishing process. So be sure to separate each piece in their own bag.
Other things that may speed up the tarnishing process are cleaning products, perfumes, cosmetics, hand sanitizers, pools and hot tubs, and saltwater. So I suggest to remove your jewellery before exposing it to these things that may damage your pieces.
Some people’s physical makeup may cause jewellery to tarnish more quickly. As well, taking medication can have a negative effect on your pieces.
So just be aware and take the time to remove jewellery if it is going to get damaged and also remember to store it in something sealable to protect it from the air.
